So, I was just reading a thread on YGG wherein the peeps were discussing odd bits and pieces found in gardens while digging them up or tilling. It made me recall all the railroad tie nails that my mom found when creating her garden at the house I grew up in on the Long Beach Peninsula. We had a big, ol' canning jar full of giant rusty spikes that sat on our mantel from all the finds in the garden. It made me start a search on the Clamshell Railroad, as it was called. It was also called America's Western-most line. Pretty interesting.
The Secret Squirrel and I were recalling reading some books written based on people and locations on the Peninsula. She ordered on of them called Hail Columbia. I remembered reading The Nickel-Plated Beauty and O! The Red Rose Tree. They were pretty rad books, featuring kids that grew up on the Peninsula in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Eventually I need to find a couple copies for myself. Too bad they're out of print right now.

I remember those too. I really liked O! The Red Rose Tree, but Nickel-Plated Beauty was also good. I was actually thinking about trying to get a hold of these too at some point.
The copy I got of Hail Columbia was in pretty good shape and only cost about $5 with shipping. Not bad. It looks just like the one I use to check out from the OP liberary, but this one is from a liberary in Montana.
