Thinking back, there were a few movies that really captured me as a child. I adored The Labyrinth. I wanted to be Sarah so badly (to be sure... I didn't want a baby brother. I just wanted to interact with David Bowie). I loved the goblins, the caterpiller, Didymus' birdhat. I was terrified of the firey guys. I hid behind my dad's lazyboy to watch that part. I think I forced my family to watch the movie at least 5 times the first time we rented it.
I was fascinated by the Dark Crystal. The bit where the Chamberlain skekses is stripped freaked me out, though. Even as a child, my imagination takes everything one step farther. I thought they were tearing off his flesh the first time I watched it. The mystery of the High Priest and their runes and circles, man! I had to try to figure that out. The near tradegy of Kira, before she develops wings. I loved it.
What I find strange, is that I hated The Never Ending Story. I really didn't like the big flying dog thing. Didn't like the hero. None of it. It still irks me, and I'm not sure why. I also had not seen the Last Unicorn until this year. Weird, eh?

The part when the Podling gets its essence sucked out was the part that really scared me as a kid. Funny though, I showed it to my students a while back (at EHS) and they mostly laughed. What a difference a few years makes!

I, on the other hand, LOVED the luck dragon in Neverending Story.

The last unicorn was invented to make kids cry and be miserable. That's all it's good for.

(It's funny that every kid who grew up watching Labyrinth was exposed to David Bowie in tight, tight pants. I can't believe the Moral Majority let that slide...)

Yipee, I am not the only one. We grew up with the Jim Henson movies, and the Jim Henson hour, do you remember that from the late 80's? It had the Storyteller as the second half hour. We also disliked the Neverending movie. I think I have only seen it once, whereas, I still watch Labyrinth at least once or twice a year. I even have the soundtrack...Dark Crystal still terrifies me at parts...those big kidnapping spiders...the soul sucking...

Oh, I was so in love with David Bowie and his tight, tight pants. Labyrinth and Princess Bride always went together for me. I wanted to sword fight and have high adventure and true love. The Dark Crystal always scared me a little. The soul sucking and stabbing with the crystal shard freaked me out.
