I would recommend giving this article, "Why Bother?" a few minutes of your time. I haven't yet read Michael Pollan's recent books, but I very much enjoyed this article. I remember The Botany of Desire selling like crazy, when I worked at the Bookstore(tm).

Here's a tidbit I like:

"....Measured against the Problem We Face, planting a garden sounds pretty benign, I know, but in fact it’s one of the most powerful things an individual can do — to reduce your carbon footprint, sure, but more important, to reduce your sense of dependence and dividedness...."

"In Defense of Food" is on my book stack. Summer read, for sure.
